Bad light that day. I left the lab at one when the sun was shining and the sky was blue, but by the time I got to the beach the storm was rolling in, the wind picking up and then the rain started. This is one of the few shots I got with nice light. The next morning BBC News were down here monitoring the force 10 that had arrived overnight, closing the bridges.
The bridge is the second motorway crossing of the estuary, the first built in the 1960s, and this in the 1990s, following a similar route to the Severn railway tunnel. The bridge has a bend in the middle, hence the shipping channel span being visible here. The Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary have a huge tidal range, and at low tide much of this becomes mud flats.

Great shot...I like the way that the rest of the bridge appears in the distance.
