The power station at Didcot, south of Oxford, is one of Britain's largest, and is prominant on the Great Western main line railway, between London and Bristol. Didcot A is a 1960s 2,000MW coal fired generator, and Didcot B is a 1990s 1,360MW gas fired generator. Didcot A was recently the subject of Greenpeace demonstrations, with 30 protesters breaking in and painting "Blair's Legacy" on the 200m main chimney. Didcot A is scheduled for closure sometime in the next decade, though experiments with conversion to gas and biomass are ongoing.

Bottom left: As the River Avon flows out of the city of Bristol, England, it cuts through a limestone ridge to form the Avon Gorge. Isambard Kingdom Brunel's 414 metre long Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the gorge, 75 metres above high water.
Middle left: The original route of the river has been "floated" with lock gates to produce the Floating Harbour.
Centre, bottom: On the west bank of the gorge, in Somerset, is Leigh Woods, donated to the National Trust in the early 20th century to prevent any further development of the gorge.
Middle, right: Bristol's largest park, on its outskirts (and actually outside the city's boundaries, despite being owned by the city) is the Ashton Court Estate. The mansion is now a conference centre, and the park used for summer festivals. During this photo, the Balloon Fiesta was being set up.
The end of my 24+ hour journey: bus from Cincinnati to Chicago, plane to Dublin, plane to Bristol. Cheap flights and all that. Actually, I say end of the journey, there was then car to the new house in Bristol and then down to my parents' in Dorset.

I don't usually go for these HDR things, but I thought I'd have a play. I wanted to get the moody sky and the foreground subject, but without loosing all the shadows and making a dull, flat, grey image like so many HDRs.This is on the corner of Dixmyth Avenue and Clifton Avenue, beside the hospital which was being extended in early 2006.

Stourhead Gardens at the height of autumn, 2006. Stourhead is a National Trust owned country estate in Wiltshire, South West England, with a Georgian Palladian mansion. The gardens are designed by Henry Hoare II and Henry Flitcroft and filled with little neoclassical features, like the bridge. The lake is filled by the nearby spring of the River Stour.

St Peter's Church, in central Bristol, was badly damaged by bombing in WWII. Surrounding mediaeval and victorian buildings were cleared, but the church has been propped up with concrete and steel. The plot was never redeveloped, and is now a park. Over christmas 2006 a ferris wheel came to town to entertain shoppers at the nearby Broadmead shopping centre.
Still playing with channel mixer. Not sure about this one, picked up quite a few artifacts in all the processing...
Update: wow, I'm shocked at how popular this one turned out to be, I thought the other b&ws were far superior!

Leigh Woods in North Somerset, England. Located just accross the Avon Gorge from the city of Bristol, the woods were given to the National Trust in the early 20th century to prevent further development around the gorge, and are now a popular spot for dog walks, etc. Taken in autumn 2006, as the leaves were about to turn, and the fungi were proliferating.

The raised area on the left is the site of the old manor house, where Robert Boyle (of "the product of the volume and pressure of a fixed quantity of an ideal gas is constant, given constant temperature" fame) lived between ~1645 and ~1654 (sources vary: Wikipedia goes for '45-'54, while Pitt-Rivers (1966) says '44 to '55). Despite the various local ghost stories involving a tragic fire destroying the building (the same legends must exist in every village in the country, with only the names changed), the poorly maintained house was demolished in 1827. The farmhouse on the right, amongst other local buildings, was built with the stone from the house.

The M4 motorway crossing the estuary of the UK's longest River, the Severn, where it flows into the Atlantic as the Bristol Channel. The bridge is the third surface crossing of the estuary (though the first, a railway bridge, was damaged in storms several decades ago and, being redundant with the railway tunnel beneath this bridge, has been entirely dismantled), and crosses between Bristol, England, and Newport, Wales. It was constructed in the mid-1990s to relieve traffic from the original M4 suspension bridge several miles upstream. The Bristol Channel has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, so while the main span has to cross a shipping channel, the rest of the bridge's length sits in shallow water.

Sculpture in Millennium Square, Bristol, formerly an industrial quayside, now a land of bars, casinos and interactive museums. A couple of weeks ago the local weekend freesheet had a most fascinating item about how the At-Bristol underground car park, whose entrance this sculpture marks, was declared the third best car park in Britain, or somesuch.

Trooper's Hill is unique amongst the geology of Bristol. While most of the city sits on limestone and clay, Trooper's Hill is a small lump of ore-rich limestone, supporting its own ecology and industry, on the banks of the Avon to the east of the city centre. This chimney drew air up from the riverside industry. The hill is now a park/nature reserve.

In WWII large areas the industrial centre of Bristol were damaged by bombing. While most were rebuilt with bland utilitarian blocks, Castle Park, beside the harbour and Broadmead shopping centre remained undeveloped. The ruins were cleared, with the exception of two churches, roofless and propped up with concrete beams, and the rest of the plot landscaped. A small, somewhat pointless and artsy water feature has been built beside St Peter's Church. Over christmas 2006 a ferris wheel was erected to entertain shoppers.
I wasn't especially excited about how this shot turned out, but it got a good response...

On the way to the balloon fiesta. Taken from the little bit of land between the river, harbour outflow, and Brunel Way. One of the few times I've actually seen a decent high tide here. I should probably have cropped more off the top?
The suspension bridge is an Isambard Kingdom Brunel design constructed in the 1850s-60s. The 1,352 ft (414 m) span crosses the tidal River Avon 245 ft (75 m) below. The limestone gorge forms a spectacular defensive entrance to the city's docks.

The first church was established here in 705 by King Ine of Wessex, at the urging of Saint Aldhelm, Bishop of Sherborne, and some interior features date from this time. Parts of the present structure date to the 10th century, but much of the building was constructed in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and dedicated in 1239. The diocese was split in the 10th century and the first Bishop of Wells was Athelm (circa 909), who crowned King Athelstan and later became Archbishop of Canterbury.
By the reign of Henry VIII the cathedral and peripheral buildings were complete, but the instability of the country -- especially the church -- over the following years led to decline and vandalism of the cathedral. During the civil war dean Dr. Walter Ralegh, nephew of Sir Walter, was imprisoned and later died in the cathedral.
Following the restoration of Charles II to the throne the cathedral was less neglected, but it wasn't until the Victorian era that the cathedral was properly renovated, including the removal of the exterior whitewash that had covered the cathedral since mediaeval times.

Redcliffe Wharf and Welsh Back on Bristol's Floating Harbour, taken from Redcliffe Bridge. On the right are the old warehouses of Redcliffe, now mostly luxuary appartments and offices. On the left, mostly out of shot, are the student halls -- I'm sure UWE are sitting on a fortune there. They must have bought those buildings up back when derelict industry and the harbour itself was seen as an opportunity for demolition and paving over, rather than an opertunity for more generic appartments. In the distance, partly hidden, is Bristol Bridge, on the site of the first crossing of the River. I think the spire is St Nicholas'.
Thanks for all the comments and faves! I didn't think this was the best of the evening, let alone one of the best ever! But it shot up to #3 in interestingness for Bristol, and #12 overall. Just goes to show, correcting the white ballance isn't always worth it!

The "magic" of the magic fountains can't be seen from this side. It is an optical illusion that makes the water look like it's flowing uphill, by placing it on ground that is sloping down slightly towards the "top" of the actually level channels, and placing writing on the side that is parallel with the ground. Thus the ground looks level, while the channels appear to be sloping.
