Portland Bill, at the southern tip of the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. Sticking over a mile into the English Channel, the waters around Portland are treacherous and known for shipwreaks. I'm not entirely sure what the little coin operated telescope is for, there's nothing but water to see on one side, and nothing but the obelisk to see on the other. Well, actually, I do know what it's for: making money from the parents of small children who insist on playing with the thing.

Taken back in September 2006, and converted to B&W with PS channel mixer's immitation filters.

Where the streets are paved with fossils

Large version - Comment at flickr.com

Photoblog: 12 Jun 2007

Lyme Regis is famous for its fossils. sitting towards the western end of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, it is part of a coastline internationally recognised for its geology. Mary Anning discovered the first ichthyosaur fossil here in the early 19th century, and one would be unlucky not to find a fossil on the beach if searching.

These, though, are apparently not real fossils, but replicas made from Coade Stone, a substance I hadn't even heard of until I looked up info on this shot. The pavement outside the museum is made from them.

Not really sure what they are. Look too small to be plover or knots? Not quite the right bill for dunlin. The sanderling (Calidris alba) description fits quite well: 20cm (8in), found on a sandy shore, ceaseless in their movements (they were running back and forth with every wave that came in)...

Not sure which side of the Dorset/Wilts border this is, but it's at Wincombe, just outside Shaftesbury. Not a great place for photography -- wooded valleys with not much in them -- and not a great photography day, just cloudy enough to block out the sun half the time, but not cloudy enough for moody skies. The few shots I got were therefore mostly sheep and close ups.

Photoblog: 05 Jun 2007

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is an Isambard Kingdom Brunel design constructed in the 1850s-60s. The 1,352 ft (414 m) span crosses the tidal River Avon 245 ft (75 m) below. The limestone gorge forms a spectacular defensive entrance to the city's docks.

I didn't think this shot was particularly special, but somebody clearly thought it good enough to buy a print...

Wells Cathedral

Large version - Comment at flickr.com

Photoblog: 02 Jun 2007

I was going through old sets looking for stuff to print, and noticed that the ones of Wells Cathedral were very red, so I decided to see how it would turn out with cooler white ballance. I also cropped this to 10x8, and made sure the building was centred. Half of the stars are fakes/exaggerations: not sure whether that's too obvious or too kitsch...

Excluding the square mile, Wells is England's smallest city, being the size of an average market town. Indeed, the scene may be vaguely familiar to those who have seen the Simon Pegg film "Hot Fuzz", which was filmed in the city. The diocese of Bath and Wells was created in the 10th century, when a large diocese based in Sherborne, Dorset, was divided between Bath and Wells, Sarum (Salisbury) and Winchester. The building has been evolving for over a millennium (the oldest surviving part dating to 705 CE) , and following years of neglect and abuse was renovated in the Victorian era.

You can see more photos of Wells, including the original of this, here.
