Photoblog: 23 Jan 2012

On Ludgate Hill, in front of St Paul's.

The politicians in the City of London don't like this pedestrian crossing because it holds them up when they're passing through in their taxis. But nobody likes the idea of traffic lights in front of the cathedral's west face, so they've never managed to reverse the priority so that the motoring minority can save a few seconds...

cyclelondoncity.blogspot.com/2011/07/city-of-london-polit...

It's an anomaly in a city where the mayor is trying to make it ever harder and less pleasant to walk around, in order to prioritise the motoring few...

Galleries: Edinburgh

On Calton Hill in Edinburgh one afternoon at the end of May last year, while on an extended ride over every set of hills I could find between Derby and Fort William. I wrote about Calton Hill, its views, and how it has become a ritual to quickly pop up the hill first thing on arriving in Edinburgh, to survey the Old Town and New, and out over Leith and the Firth of Forth to Fife.

Wikipedia says: Calton Hill is a hill in central Edinburgh, Scotland, just to the east of the New Town and is included in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Views of, and from, the hill are often used in photographs and paintings of the city. Calton Hill is the headquarters of the Scottish Government, which is based at St Andrew’s House, on the steep southern slope of the hill; with the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace lying near the foot of the hill. The hill also includes several iconic monuments and buildings: the National Monument, Nelson’s Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the old Royal High School, the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs’ Monument and the City Observatory.
