Photoblog: 23 Apr 2007

Also written as Rammohun Roy, Raja Rammohon Rae, or Raja Ram Mohun Roy. Nineteenth century Indian (Bengali) statesman who died in Bristol when petitioning the British government for reforms and women's rights, such as the outlaw of sati, the Hindu custom of burning widows on their husband's funeral pyre. He was originally buried at Stapleton to the north of the city, until Arnos Vale cemetery opened. The grade I listed tomb was constructed in 1843. The cemetery became very overgrown in the mid-late 20th century, and is currently undergoing restoration -- this tomb will be restored with the aid of money raised by the Mayor of Calcutta.

Tumour cell colonies after two weeks growing in full serum media and then stained with crystal violet. I just made a nice picture with all six treatments, but I'm not showing you that. If you want to know the details you'll have to wait a few months for publication. (Edited to remove a few more details, just in case.)

Backlit, with D50 on tripod at 55mm, 1/320 F9 & ISO 200. Raw file photoshopped to correct white ballance, blank out the sides of the wells and plate, and cropped to show only one treatment.

(This is one of the few photos I can't license under CC/GFDL, sorry.)

The only HDR I did that day...

Eling appears to have been gentrified quite a bit, though being on the outskirts of a national park, it's done in a far more tasteful way than most gentrification. The container terminal is still here though -- one of several on Southampton Water, which handles most of Britain's freight these days.

Large version - Comment at flickr.com

Photoblog: 12 Apr 2007

"The Council House has been the seat of local government in Bristol, England since 1956. It is situated on College Green, opposite the Cathedral and at the foot of Park Street in Bristol city centre. Throughout its history it has been home to Bristol city council. It was designed in the 1930s but built after World War II. The architect was Vincent Harris.

It is a grade II* listed building. The concrete frame is clad with very wide, thin bricks, with Portland stone dressings and a leaded hipped roof in a Neo-Georgian style. The steep and high roof with gilded unicorns to the corners of the end blocks.

The foundation stone for The Council House was laid in 1938 and the building was opened by the Queen in 1956. The ceremonial entrance overlooks the moat and leads into the reception hall which is lined with local Doulting stone and paved with black and white Italian marble. It also features a blue and gold wall clock, encircled by the signs of the zodiac and equipped with its own wind indicator. The Conference Hall is the largest room in the building. The names of all Majors and Lord Mayors of Bristol since 1216 are cut into the stone walls. The walls of the Lord Mayor’s Reception Room are panelled in English Walnut and there is a colourful frieze displaying the heraldry of the Bristol trade guilds, and, in gold leaf, the names of famous Bristolians." - Wikipedia

Looking down the Bristol Channel (Atlantic) coast towards Burnham-on-Sea and the Parrett estuary from Breen Down, the western extremity of the limestone Mendip Hills, which extends for a mile into the channel. The Somerset levels, 650 km² of peat bog, extend off to the east (left) and south. This flat land was once regulaly under water, but drainage ditches, and the sea wall seen along the coast here have allowed development and increased agriculture. The levels are mostly at sea level, and Brent Knoll (distant left), Glastonbury Tor (30m SE) and the Isle of Athelny are the only significant hills on the levels.
