The Princess Elizabeth, presumably on some sort of test excercise, crossing the 402 m 24 arch Ribblehead viaduct (built 1870-74) in the Yorkshire Dales national park in northern England. The Settle-Carlisle railway was threatened with closure in the 1980s because British Rail did not want to spend the money required to keep the viaduct safe. Fortunately the plans were made long after the public backlash against railway closures had set in, and the closure was strongly opposed, forcing BR to refurbish the line.
I wasn't expecting this train to come along -- a fortutous accident of right place and time.

Played around with making the colours nice a cool. Fiddled with Photoshop's Hue and then spent ages fine tuning it with curves and forgot all about the "filters" - I could have just applied a cooling filter :/

One man and his dog on a small corner of Brean Sands, Somerset, seen from the top of Brean Down, a headland at the end of the Mendip Hills. The Bristol Channel has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, and its shallow sloping sand and mud beaches can therefore become miles wide at low tide.

Seen from Shapwick Heath nature reserve on the peat workings. The tor rises from the Somerset Levels, and before drainage of the area, would have been an island.

Portland Bill, at the southern tip of the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. Sticking over a mile into the English Channel, the waters around Portland are treacherous and known for shipwreaks. I'm not entirely sure what the little coin operated telescope is for, there's nothing but water to see on one side, and nothing but the obelisk to see on the other. Well, actually, I do know what it's for: making money from the parents of small children who insist on playing with the thing.
Taken back in September 2006, and converted to B&W with PS channel mixer's immitation filters.

Lyme Regis is famous for its fossils. sitting towards the western end of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, it is part of a coastline internationally recognised for its geology. Mary Anning discovered the first ichthyosaur fossil here in the early 19th century, and one would be unlucky not to find a fossil on the beach if searching.
These, though, are apparently not real fossils, but replicas made from Coade Stone, a substance I hadn't even heard of until I looked up info on this shot. The pavement outside the museum is made from them.

Not really sure what they are. Look too small to be plover or knots? Not quite the right bill for dunlin. The sanderling (Calidris alba) description fits quite well: 20cm (8in), found on a sandy shore, ceaseless in their movements (they were running back and forth with every wave that came in)...

Not sure which side of the Dorset/Wilts border this is, but it's at Wincombe, just outside Shaftesbury. Not a great place for photography -- wooded valleys with not much in them -- and not a great photography day, just cloudy enough to block out the sun half the time, but not cloudy enough for moody skies. The few shots I got were therefore mostly sheep and close ups.
